What to expect

Sessions generally take an hour – meaning you will have many images to look through when we’re done!

Location – All session locations are discussed and determined upon booking, whether here on our yard, at your place, at the lake or elsewhere. (All travel outside of a 35km radius of Boissevain = mileage at $0.45/km)

Our session will be relaxed and casual. I plan for time for clothing changes, snacks, drinks and snuggles (for kids and the parents too!). Please allow me to work around your child’s needs, how they are feeling at the time and allowing them time to warm up to play. I like to capture their personalities, and this is done best by giving them room to move. Older kids like to be the ones that can run the show, or help out, and I go with that as well.

So what is all in a session?

Once you’ve booked your session, what to wear?!? If the clothing is noticeable in a portrait, it could easily become a distraction. Clothing that does not attract attention to itself is the ultimate goal. It could be the difference between a very successful portrait and just another picture. Here’s a few guidelines to consider.

Good ideas:

  • Wearing outfits in the same color family (light blue and dark blue, etc.)
  • Nature colours (greens, blues, browns, etc)
  • Solids or simple patterns
  • Fitted clothing – big, baggy shirts can make you look a lot larger than you are. Dark clothing tends to slenderize!
  • Don’t forget shoes – your shoes will be in images as well!
  • Comfortable clothes you can sit, stand, run, and jump around in.
  • Jeans, paired with a dressy top Accessories: funky necklaces, jackets, hats, scarves, sunglasses, etc.

Please avoid:

  • Bright white shirts
  • Wild patterns or horizontal stripes (too distracting!)
  • Shirts with writing or logos
  • Wide open necklines can thicken the neck, while a turtleneck or v-neck top is flattering.
  • Keep in mind short sleeve shirts and shorts show more flesh, which takes away from the face, which can be distracting. Layers instead work great to give different options during the session.

(Feel free to check out my Pinterest board I’ve created too to help with clothing colours/choices, as sometimes I know it can seem overwhelming. Above all else, remember to wear what is comfortable for you!)

Things you might want to bring with you:

  • Depending on the time of year, think about your shoe choice, as your footwear may make the picture!
  • Change of clothes in case one gets dirty or wet, or just to change it up
  • Hairband, clips, ponytail holder, etc
  • Any props you want to use: anthing that is meaningful to you!

Let’s show off that baby bump! Black, from head to toe is usually good but so can a light flowing sundress. A simple black or white (or both!) button down top in which the bottom area can be unbuttoned easily to expose your belly works best. Dad is especially welcome, I love to see them but especially their hands in the image! Kids are also welcome, please refer to ‘family’ above to note for clothing choices, but in this case either casual with black or white tops works well. As I will be taking many hand pictures, please be aware of jewellery choices that will be in the image. (Rings, watches, etc) If you know if you are having a boy or a girl, feel free to bring any props that you’d like, if you so desire. Lastly, these are your images. Feel free to talk to me about what you are comfortable with, and what you had in mind. Your images will be fantastic!

Most babies, especially 2 weeks and younger, are best with little clothing and props. If you want them to be photographed with clothes, solid colours usually work best. Any outfits that you would like your baby in, we will take an image of just that too. Any props or sentimental items are also to be included! I usually try to get socks and diapers off early to let any crease lines in their skin to come out, so don’t worry about any accidents. I’m used to it!

Newborns generally take a good 2 hours. Don’t worry about the time, I work according to how your baby is doing. We have time for feeding, changing and lots of cuddles! I also always try to get a few images of mom and dad, so solid colours in casual works best too.

Kids: toddlers, school age and teens

Casual and relaxed. Solid colours work best again here too. Toddlers and kids love the clothes that they can move in. Some examples:

  • Bright and fun and funky bring out a whimsical side.
  • Khaki’s, blue jeans, and white shirts are for more serious captures.
  • A pretty dress is always beautiful for little girls.
  • Don’t forget hats, sunglasses, boots, blankets, jackets, etc. can be great to show personality and bring out their silly side. Feel free to bring any other prop or comfort item that you want to include.

Teens have their own sense of style. Let them be expressive.

My goal is to give you timeless and classic images. Your clothing choice plays a role in this. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.
